Sprouting

I love really good, fresh sprouts. All kinds. I dislike, very much, slimy or stale sprouts.

Ken and I have been doing some research on sprouting, and discovered this blog, Vegan Cycling. Dave Noisy has a link there for Sprouting 101. Simple, easy steps to follow. I highly suggest you give it a look.

We have just finished sprouting mung beans for 3 days. We decided that we probably only need to sprout them for 2 days because they have begun sprouting leaves, and we don’t necessarily need those! You can see the leaves in the picture.

They are delicious, and I am sitting here eating them just raw all by themselves. I love them. Hopefully a few will make it to the salad.

Anyhow, different beans/seeds/nuts will take different times to sprout. On Vegan Cycling, he gives great tips on all kinds of sprouting.

I just started some organic, raw, hulled sunflower seeds to soak for sprouting.

I especially love sunflower sprouts. They are delicious eaten alone or with someone :), I mean with stirfrys, in salads, etc.

So, what I suggest is that you find out what you want to sprout, gather your equipment (very simple stuff), then find out how many days it will take you to sprout them. I have found that sprouts stay good for about 2-3 days in the fridge, so you might want to start a sprout whenever you finish one, like I did today, or a day or so before they finish. That way you will have fresh sprouts coming in all the time. I am going to purchase some of those green bags to store them in and see how they last then. I’ll let you know.

Just give it a try. Especially if you have children. They will love watching the sprouts grow and seeing the day to day changes.

Happy, Healthy Eating,
